Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Sydney CBD
We begin to gain our wisdom teeth in our teenage years, with this continuing into a person’s late twenties. For some patients, their wisdom teeth may cause more harm than good, particularly if there isn’t enough room in the jaw for the new teeth to erupt. This is why we also offer wisdom teeth extractions as part of our reputable general dentistry services.
Dr Tony Goswell is highly experienced in routine wisdom teeth extractions, however if we find your case is advanced and needs the help of a specialist, we’ll refer you to another trusted oral health care professional.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
While our dentist assesses each individual case to determine whether the wisdom teeth require removal, there are some common reasons why extraction may be necessary. These include:
- Severe pain or discomfort
- Cysts or tumours developing near the tooth
- Impaction (there is not enough room for the teeth to erupt above the gum line)
- Crowding caused by pressure from the wisdom teeth
- Wisdom teeth causing damage to the surrounding teeth
- Gum disease
- Tooth decay beyond repair
While our dentist will do everything within his power to save a patient’s natural tooth, there are cases where extraction will provide the best outcome for the patient’s long-term oral health and wellbeing.
The Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure
The procedure begins with our dental administering local anaesthetic if surgery is taking place in our practice, or general anaesthesia will be administered if being performed in hospital. If the tooth hasn’t erupted through the gum yet, a small incision will be made so it is accessible. From here, our dentist can gently remove the wisdom tooth, before sealing the area with dissolvable stitches if needed. Additionally, patients may be given antibiotics to prevent infection and further assist with healing. A follow-up appointment will then be made so our dentist can assess and monitor the site.
