What is a Dental Cavity?
Put simply, a cavity is damage to the tooth caused by decay. The decay starts at the surface of your tooth, before the enamel is eroded to form craters or holes on the tooth’s surface. As the decay worsens, the cavity can become larger and spread into the deeper layers of your teeth. If left untreated, a cavity can cause more complex issues down the line, including infection of the root (requiring root canal treatment), severe toothache, or even removal of the tooth altogether.
Do You Have a Cavity?
Sometimes, a patient may not even be aware that he or she has a cavity, however there are some tell-tale signs to look out for. These include:
- Toothache, even if mild
- Increased sensitivity
- Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something hot, cold, or sugary.
- Pits or holes in your teeth that you can either see or feel with your tongue
- Discolouration or staining on the surface of a tooth
- Pain when biting or chewing
The Dental Filling Procedure
We begin the procedure by numbing the tooth and its surrounding soft tissue. Our dentist then removes the decayed surfaces of the tooth, before the white composite resin is shaped into place. The colour of your filling will be matched exactly to your surrounding teeth, helping the restoration to blend-in with the rest of your smile. To complete the procedure, the site of the filling will be exposed to a bright light, helping to cure the filling in place.
